The Leprechaun in the Basement

Authors: Kathy Tucker and John Sandford
Average review score:

Cute and Colorful Tale
Michael McKeever's family is down on their luck, with Michael's father being out of work, and Michael's mother has told Michael that they have to "Make Do". Michael desperately needs need baseball shoes, as his toes are pushing through the ends, but his family cannot afford new shoes and Michael must "Make Do".

Unbeknownst to them all, O'Leary the Leprechaun has been living in their basement and is discovered by Michael on St. Patrick's Day. Michael is familiar with the tales of leprechaun's gold and desperately wants new baseball shoes. O'Leary is a very greedy leprechaun, and refuses to share his gold with Michael. Michael will have to "Make Do" as his mother says and cannot convince O'Leary to share even a small part of his gold.

During the night, greedy, old, cantankerous O"Leary has a change of heart and sews Michael a beautiful new pair of baseball shoes. Michael feels that things will be definitely getting better in their household.

Colorful book for ages 4-7, and children will learn some timely lessons in family hardships, compassion, and understanding. I thought that it was a rather cute tale and if read with a parent, the parent can help the child learn about the lessons presented in the book.

Leukocyte Recruitment, Endothelial Cell Adhesion Molecules, and Transcriptional Control: Insights for Drug Discovery
Published in Hardcover by Kluwer Academic Publishers (15 January, 2001)
Author: Tucker Collins
Average review score:

Transcriptional Basis for Leukocyte-Endothelial Interactions
'Leukocyte Recruitment, Endothelial Cell Adhesion Molecules, and Transcriptional Control' represents a compilation of thematically related chapters aimed at readers interested in a state-of the-art overview of recent advances in the field. The approach that is taken here is based upon the considerable molecular biological expertise of the authors and editor. The initial sections provide a broad-based overview of the various adhesion receptor mechanisms that are brought into play as leukocytes first roll and subsequently adhere to the vascular wall. The black-and-white graphics are especially clear, with the essential domains of the various adhesion receptors depicted schematically. The relevance of in vitro conditions of static and hydrodynamic flow, as well as in vivo correlates, are clearly discussed. Chapters are extremely well-referenced, providing the interested reader with ample opportunity for investigation of the primary source material. Of especial interest are the continual links between phenomenologic observations and transcriptional control mechanisms, especially related to cytokine activation and genetic promoter/enhancer regions. The three dimensional graphical representations of coactivator and transcriptional initiation complexes are truly outstanding. One of the features which recommends this book considerably is that it is absolutely up-to-date, covering some of the more recently described immunoglobulin superfamily members such as the MAdCAMs. Various tables are scattered throughout the text which facilitate comparisons between different adhesion receptors, with respect to genomic structure and location, structural motifs, tissue distribution, inducible regulation, and the effect of various gene deficiencies. Mechanisms underlying the activation of NF-kB represent a recurring and essential theme throughout the book, with a complete chapter dedicated to the topic. The text concludes with two chapters dedicated to placing the adhesion receptors and NF-kB-mediated adhesion receptor upregulation in a therapeutic context. The relevant actions of known anti-inflammatory agents are discussed, and future directions in the field with respect to various disease states and development of novel therapeutic strategies are anticipated. Overall, this comprehensive book presents a unified and up-to-date picture of the adhesion receptor field, including relevant transcriptional mechanisms. The book is approachable even for those outside the field because of the first-rate graphics, the comprehensive comparison tables, and the explicit relevance for various disease states. This book should represent an outstanding addition to any biomedical reference library, and is not likely to gather dust on the shelf, but rather be referred to over and over again.

The Life of Marlowe and the Tragedy of Dido Queen of Carthage (Works and Life of Christopher Marlowe Ser.)
Published in Hardcover by Gordian Pr (October, 1966)
Authors: Christopher Marlowe and Brooke C. Tucker
Average review score:

An Excellent Sequel To a Memorable Classic
Marlowe deserves credit for even trying to write a sequel to Homer's Trojan War. Jupiter (or Zeus) offers a powerful opening when he promises to aid the survivng Trojans including Aeneas. The triangle between Dido, Aneas, and Iarbus serves to keep us in suspense. The regrouping of the survivng Trojans is a memorable scene. Aeneas' telling of the war in 2.1 is dramatic and powerful. (Especially when he blames himself for allowing the Trojan Horse into their gates.) Juno (or Hera) is chilling as the venomous woman she usually is. Iarbas and Anna draw sympathy as victims of unrequited love. The tragic parting of Aeneas and Dido is quite moving, and the triple suicide of Dido, Iarbas, and Anna is a sorrowful, chilling, and yet beautifully done ending. Only Marlowe could follow up Homer's Trojan War with a sequel of this outstanding quality!

A modern documentation of the ever changing face of London fashion. A must see for anyone with an interest in fashion.

Managing the Future: 10 Driving Forces of Change for the '90s
Published in Paperback by Berkley Pub Group (December, 1991)
Author: Robert B. Tucker
Average review score:

Driving or Being Driven?
There are dozens of books on this subject, several of which I consider superior to this one (eg Drucker's Managing Change and O'Toole's Leading Change); however, Tucker has made an important contribution by suggesting and then discussing "10 Driving Forces of Change for the Next Century." They are:

• Real-Time Responsiveness

• No-Hassle Convenience

• Aging Boomers/Rising Xers

• Mass Customized Choice

• Lifestyle [Changes]

• Discounting

• Value Differentiation

• Ultra Service

• Techno-Edge

• World-Class Quality

Tucker offers thoughtful discussions of these "Driving Forces" (devoting a separate chapter to each), including also a series of mini-case studies based on companies such as Williams-Sonoma, Dell Computer, Southwest Airlines, and Charles Schwab. Please keep in mind that Tucker wrote this book almost ten years ago. So much has happened since, especially because of the Web and globalization initiatives made possible by it.

After a decade, Managing the Future remains a thoughtful, well-written book of special value to less-experienced executives. For those on higher levels of management, it may not offer much that they do not already know but it will certainly help them to clarify their thinking as they proceed into an uncertain future.

Memoirs of the Rebellion on the Border, 1863
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (August, 1993)
Authors: Wiley Britton and Phillip Tucker
Average review score:

A window into the past-
Wiley Britton's memoirs offer the reader an interesting glimpse into the life of a union solider during the Civil War. Unlike the bulk of written material about the war, this centers on the lesser known western operations along the borders of Missouri, Kansas, and Arkansas.

What makes Britton's book most entertaining and informative is that he wrote about life as it happened. While his book was edited and published after the war, it is based on daily diaries he kept. As an enlisted solider, Britton's memoirs let the reader experience what the average soldier did on a day by day basis. His observations about people, life, and the events and circumstances around him will leave you feeling you know him, and his progressive thoughts for his day leave you feeling he is your contemporary. In fact, at times you may not believe these words were written over one hundred years ago- you will be startled to realize that while time separates you, the basic thoughts and motivations of people haven't really changed all that much over the centuries. We all still want the same things from life and we still wonder about the same questions.

Memoirs of the Rebellion on the Border is a good read, and highly recommended for those interested in the lesser known campaigns of the war.

This book is a pretty good, straightforward, intro to microeconomics. It is sort of simplistic, yet the main points are crystal clear, and chapters are easy to read.
